If you planned to visit Surabaya, here is some places that I would suggest to check out:
1. Lunch at Hotel Majapahit. It's a historical Hotel that offers a package of Tour around the property and Luncheon after the tour.
2. SIOLA Museum. Just a few step from Majapahit Hotel, it's a museum of Indonesia's early modern history.
3. Tunjungan Plaza. Just a few steps from Hotel Majapahit, HUGE malls (there's 7 building connected into one complex I think), good options for lunch (cheaper than Majapahit Hotel) after visiting other sites nearby. Shopping here is a must too! There's often events inside depends on the date, so check Indonesian calendar for special events and there's probably something going on there.
(the street in front of place no. 1 to 3 often closed for festivals, parades, and bazaar, you can check the dates on the city's website so you can visit when there's events going on).
4. Grahadi Building, the office of the government of Surabaya, usually there's art performance done in Grahadi, it's just a few steps from Tunjungan Plaza.
5. Balai Pemuda / Alun-Alun Surabaya. Newly renovated city square with museum, art gallery, and street performance, just a few steps from Grahadi.
6. Balai Kota. The office of the Mayor of Surabaya, beautiful park situated in front of the building, also good street food nearby. If you walked from Balai Pemuda, there's good Ice Cream just before the bridge called Zangrandi, I suggest you get yourself some ice cream there. If you want to try local food, there's good Pecel nearby, after Zangrandi, stay at the side of the road you're on and walk toward the bridge, then cross the road and turn right, walk until you see the Pecel restaurant at the left side of the road.
7. Grand City Mall. A few steps from Balai Kota, good place to have your dinner, or buy light snacks.
8. Sampoerna Museum. Free city tour with air conditioned bus that will take you to specific historically significant places of Surabaya. Contact to reserve seats beforehand.
9. Mangrove Wonorejo. It's a Mangrove Forest with boating experience (you'll have to wait for groups because you pay less the more people on the boat).
Don't bother to visit places listed on google, like monuments, religious buildings (mosque, cathedral, etc) because most of the times they're isolated from each other and you'll spend more time travelling there than actually exploring the place because there's nothing there. Surabaya is a place best for Shopping and Eating, stay in malls or visit famous restaurant/cafe, don't spend your time commuting to places that you'll spend only 5 minute looking at the monument and nothing else to do.

Quite a big missed opportunity not to try the Gado-gado and Semanggi famous in Surabaya. Both are vegetarian dishes, kind of liked a cooked salad dressed with peanut sauce, super delicious. If I remember correctly they are sold in Galaxy Mall's food court.
